Saudi Arabia allocates SR18b for renewable energy projects
Saudi Arabia has allocated SR18 billion budget for renewable energy for a period of 10 years, Prince Turki Bin Saud Bin Muhammad Al Saud, Deputy Chairman of the Research Institute at King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST) told Okaz/Saudi Gazette Sunday on the sidelines of the two-day first conference on renewable energy that kicked off at King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM).

The budget has been allocated for several fields including strategic technology in which SR8 billion has been allotted in the first five years and SR10 billion for the next five years.

Prince Turki added that the Kingdom started investing in renewable energy 30 years ago, but interest grew at present due to the efficiency of renewable energy. He said the university’s concern for this kind of research through the Distinctiveness Center reflects the interest in this field.

He said KACST is keen to cooperate with all agencies working in this field.

He revealed a plan to support researches and studies in renewable energy. The university conducts research in this aspect, supported with the KACST’s plan, adding that there are several projects at KFUPM and other universities.

Moreover, Prince Turki said KACST is supervising a project being carried out in Al-Khafji to set up the biggest desalination plant in the world using solar energy with an output of 30,000 cubic meters of water that will provide all the needs of Al-Khafji City’s 100,000 population. The conference is under the patronage of King Abdullah, Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques.
