President inaugurates Defence R&D Centre in Andhra University.
The establishment of the Defence Research and Development Centre in Andhra University is a welcome move. Collaboration with the defence sector will bring multi-dimensional benefits to the country, besides giving a fillip to the ‘Make in India’ initiative, President Ram Nath Kovind has said.

He was speaking after officially announcing the launch of the centre set up with the support of the Ministry of Defence, here on Thursday.

The research centre should help in innovating military technology and manufacturing military equipment, the President said.

Wishing that Andhra University should become a technology hub, he said the institution would have to play a major role in the development of the country.

Referring to the second President, Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, he said: “One among my predecessors had served as the Vice-Chancellor of this university, and Vice-President M. Venkaiah Naidu is an alumnus of the institution. This university has a legacy and it should keep up the standards.”

The President said that when gender imbalance was an issue in the country, AU stood as an example. “I am happy to learn that 40% of the students in AU are women, and that is a welcome sign of women empowerment. The AU Women’s College for Engineering should produce quality technocrats,” he said. Mr. Kovind also inaugurated the plaque for the E-Classroom Complex and Incubation Centre, which was coming up at the Department of Computer Science and Systems Engineering in Andhra University College of Engineering.

Earlier, Governor of A.P. and Telangana and Chancellor of AU E.S.L. Narasimhan said AU was synonymous with quality and the Defence Research and Development Centre should play a major role in cyber security.

“Cyber terrorism will be the face of terrorists in future, and we have to counter them. It is good that the centre is focussing on cyber security. The centre should provide solutions to cyber security and work on convergence technology,” said the Governor.

Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, in his address, said AU had the potential to become a top university in the world. “It is my dream to see AU among the top 100 universities in the world and I will do my best to realise the dream,” he said.

Mr. Naidu also urged the alumni and corporates to come forward and do their bit to the university.

“Every top university in the world survives on donations from its alumni and philanthropists, and AU should tap this potential,” he said.

Vice-Chancellor G. Nageswara Rao delivered the welcome address.
