After long delay, Udangudi power project kicks off.
After a long delay stemming from a legal battle, the foundation stone for Stage I of the 2 x 660 MW Udangudi Thermal Power Project was laid by Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami through video conferencing on Monday. The project, to be undertaken by the State-owned Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), is scheduled for completion in 2021.

Speaking at the event, Mr. Palaniswami said the power situation in the State had improved since 2011, thanks to the efforts made by former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa. Efforts were on to improve the electricity infrastructure in the State, he added.

In his speech, Deputy Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam recalled how bad the power situation was under the erstwhile DMK regime and listed the efforts made by the AIADMK government to turn the situation around. He also took a dig at “those who were habitually finding fault with others,” but stopped short of naming anyone.

Electricity Minister P. Thangamani said the laying of the foundation stone for the project was a response to those who had been questioning the government about the status of various announcements made by the Chief Minister in the suo motu statements he made in the Assembly.
