|The construction of a skyway across Panagal Road here to connect Government Rajaji Hospital's trauma care centre near Anna Bus Stand and the upcoming 320-bed super-speciality block on the opposite side of the road is expected to be over in a few weeks with the placement of girders on Sunday, hospital sources said.|
The stretch of Panagal Road from Anna Bus Stand to Elango Corporation Higher Secondary School was closed for traffic throughout the day as earthmoving equipment were deployed to place the girders. According to hospital sources, the skyway was envisaged when the proposal was made for super-speciality block to facilitate swift transfer of patients between the block and the trauma care centre.
The roughly 100-feet long skyway will be the second such structure in Madurai. The other skyway in Chokkikulam, albeit smaller, connects two wings of Vadamalayan Hospital on either side of the road. “Since the new skyway leaps over a busy road, the height was increased so that lorries and buses can pass under it with ease. We chose Sunday when the traffic will be less,” said a contractor involved in the work.
Though the work is expected to be completed in a few weeks, the Health and Family Welfare Department recently informed Madurai Bench of Madras High Court that the completion of the super-speciality block, which has already witnessed prolonged delays, will take another six months.
