Honda to Set Up Exclusive Electric Motorcycle Plant in India by 2028.

Japanese auto giant Honda Motor has announced plans to establish a dedicated electric motorcycle production plant in India by 2028, aiming to expand its footprint in the growing EV market. The facility will manufacture a diverse range of electric two-wheelers using modular components shared across multiple models.

While Honda has yet to disclose the plant's location or investment details, Minoru Kato, Executive Officer and Chief Officer of Honda’s Motorcycle Business Unit, confirmed the move in a global address. "Honda is striving to offer electric motorcycles at a price point where the total cost of ownership (TCO) over three years will match that of internal combustion engine (ICE) models," Kato stated.

The upcoming facility is expected to produce at least eight models of electric scooters and motorcycles, according to senior officials. To ensure stable battery supply, Honda is working with battery manufacturers to develop specifications suited to electric motorcycles.

India’s electric two-wheeler market is experiencing strong growth, supported by government subsidies and new entrants. Kato noted that the segment now generates around one million annual sales, accounting for 5% of the total two-wheeler market.

Globally, Honda expects to sell 20.2 million motorcycles in 2024, with Asia—including India, Indonesia, Thailand, and Vietnam—accounting for 85% (17.17 million units). The company achieved record-breaking motorcycle sales in 37 countries in 2024 and aims to capture nearly 50% of the global market, including EVs.

To support its expansion, Honda’s subsidiary, Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India (HMSI), will leverage its extensive sales network of 6,000 outlets to provide comprehensive service and charging infrastructure across the country. “We will ensure a seamless experience for customers by expanding charging facilities, especially for fixed-battery models,” Kato added.

As part of its broader EV strategy, Honda plans to introduce 30 electric models globally by 2030, targeting annual sales of 4 million electric motorcycles. In 2024, Honda marked the "first year of electric globalization" and made its full-fledged EV entry with models designed specifically for India, including the Activa e: and the QC1.
