Top priority given for irrigation improvement programme

Lahore: Irrigation and Power Department is giving top priority to rehabilitation and improvement of existing irrigation infrastructure in the province for ensuring equitable supply of water to farming community. In this regard, developmental programme has been designed in such a way as to provide abundant and efficient supply of water even to the tail ends.

This was stated by Senior Minister, Raja Riaz Ahmad while talking to a group of farmers at his residence.Officers of Punjab Irrigation and Drainage Authority were also present.

He said that Rs 9142 million are being spent on the second phase of the project of rehabilitation of Lower Chenab Canal system. He said that this project has been started in the districts of Faisalabad, Hafizabad, Sheikhupura and Toba Tek Singh.

This project will ensure sustainable supply of canal water to 1.69 million acres of irrigated lands, he told. Rehabilitation of 2173 KM long channels and 231 bridges is also an important component of this project.

Irrigation Dept is utilising all possible resources to facilitate farming community so that agricultural productivity could be further increased, he added.
