After 11 months, work on Vadapalani flyover resumes.

Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has commenced work on its portion of the Rs. 69.4-crore flyover at the intersection of Arcot Road and Jawaharlal Nehru Salai (Inner Ring Road).

CMRL officials said the work began last week and currently, soil tests are going on. The work is expected to be completed in 15 months. The flyover will be integrated with Vadapalani Metro station.

In 2005-06, the State government had given its nod for the project. But work was put on hold as Metro Rail construction was in progress on Jawaharlal Nehru Salai.

In 2009, it was decided to integrate the station with the flyover. Following this, the highways department deposited Rs. 30 crore with CMRL towards construction costs.

The department has already laid stormwater drains and service lanes. After CMRL completes its work, the highways department will construct approach roads and ramps of the flyover in order to reduce congestion at the junction.

Meanwhile, structural and roofing work at Vadapalani Metro station is complete and interior work is progressing fast, according to CMRL officials. 'Currently, glazing work for the building is being carried out. Simultaneously, electrical, signalling and telecommunication work and installation of false ceiling is on,' an official said.
