Chittaranjan Locomotive Works to have new unit
Kolkata: Chittaranjan Locomotive Works, Indian Railways’ premier electric locomotives production unit at Burdwan in West Bengal will have a ancilliary unit at Dankuni in the state.
The new unit will manufacture a portion of CLW's critical sub-assemblies, such as shells and components such as cabs, side-walls, roofs and head stocks.
The proposed Dankuni ancillary unit, will be set up by the Indian Railways on a ‘Build, Own, Operate’ (BOO) basis. The unit will make static equipment such as traction converters, auxiliary converters and hotel load converters (including associated switchboard/termination board and driving interface equipment) for the 3-phase 6,000 hp broad gauge passenger and freight locomotives made at CLW.
Some of the sub-assembly items which is partly outsourced because of the increased production target set for CLW, are proposed to be made at the Dankuni ancillary unit. Advanced IGBT (Insulated Gate Bi-polar Transistor) technology will be used to establish the state-of-art regenerative braking system in 3-phase locos.
