Gangavaram port to double capacity soon.

Gangavaram Port is on verge of completing its Rs. 1300-crore expansion to double its capacity to 60 million tonne.

The port developed in the city near Gajuwaka under Public Private Participation mode would be completing the mechanisation work in a month or two, a spokesperson for Gangavaram Port Limited told The Hindu . The expansion is expected to help take advantage of increasing demand of imported coal by various power plants and exploring tapping project and other cargoes.

The spokesperson said they were expecting robust growth in the demand of raw material for fuelling the industrial growth in the country.

The port, which started with five berths, handled 20.74 million tonnes during 2014-15 as against 15.81 million tonnes the previous year.

The expansion involved building new berths and related infrastructure which includes stockyards, railway tracks, pollution control measure and other facilities. As part of expansion, one additional fully mechanised coal terminal (capable of handling Cape size vessel up to 200,000 DWT), three multipurpose berths (capable of handling Panamax size vessels) and state-of-the-art mechanised bulk material handling systems.

The project also includes additional rail sidings, ancillary civil works and additional mechanised stock yards.
