Hyderabad Metro's Second Phase to Introduce Four New Corridors

Hyderabad Metro Rail Ltd (HMRL) has unveiled plans for the second phase of the Hyderabad Metro, introducing a new route map and abandoning routes proposed by the previous government. The Managing Director of HMRL, N.V.S. Reddy, announced on Monday that the new phase will see the construction of Metro rail lines covering a total stretch of 70 km.

Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for these new metro corridors are currently in progress and are expected to be finalized within the next three months.

The decision to revise the route map was made after Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy directed the removal of routes proposed by the previous government, citing their limited utility for the majority of commuters. Among the dropped routes is the Raidurg to Shamshabad Airport corridor, which had its foundation stone laid last year and was estimated to cost Rs. 6,250 crore.

In response, alternative routes have been formulated to ensure effective airport connectivity, addressing increased traffic congestion and anticipated future demand for public transportation.

The proposed new routes aim to connect the airport from four corners of the city, ensuring widespread accessibility to metro rail services for the majority of Hyderabad city commuters, according to HMRL.

The primary objective of this redesigned metro rail connectivity is to provide public transportation to a larger population at a reduced cost compared to the earlier proposed network, which was expected to incur significant expenses while serving a smaller number of people.

Currently, Hyderabad Metro Rail operates on a 69 km stretch in three corridors between Miyapur and LB Nagar, JBS station to MGBS, and Nagole to Rayadurg.

In the second phase, the metro rail network between Secunderabad JBS to MGBS will be extended up to Chandrayangutta Cross Road. Additionally, four new corridors are planned under Corridor 2, Corridor 4, Corridor 5, and Corridor 6, covering various key areas of the city.
