Karnataka Pitches Bengaluru for R&D Expansion in Talks with Renesas in Japan.

Karnataka's Minister for Large and Medium Industries and Infrastructure Development, M. B. Patil, met with top executives from Renesas Electronics Corporation in Tokyo, signaling the state's strategic interest in solidifying its role in India's semiconductor mission.

During the meeting, the delegation discussed Renesas's plans to expand its R&D footprint in Bengaluru and its ambitious project to design India's first 3nm chips in the country. Renesas, a leading global semiconductor supplier, recently opened an expanded facility in Bengaluru in May of this year, making it the company's largest site in India. The facility now houses over half of the company’s India-based R&D and embedded performance software teams.

Renesas previously announced its intention to scale its India workforce to 1,000 employees by the end of 2025.

The Government of Karnataka views Renesas’s expansion as a strategic development that aligns with the nation's broader semiconductor mission, fostering innovation and creating new opportunities for academia, startups, and the industry. This collaboration is seen as a crucial step toward positioning India as a global leader in advanced semiconductor design.
