Odisha government clears NTPC’s Talcher project.

The government of Odisha has approved NTPC’s Talcher Thermal Power Station expansion plan entailing an investment of Rs. 7,698 crore.

The project involves setting up 1320 (2 X 660 MW) super critical power units on the existing premises of 460 MW Talcher Thermal Power Station in Odisha’s Angul district.

“These would be state-of-the-art 660 MW super critical units,” a senior CTPC official said.

The board of director of NTPC cleared the project in 2018 which involved scrapping the existing six units at the thermal power station totalling 460 MW comprising of 4 units of 60 MW and 2 units of 110 MW.

The total installed capacity of the company is 58,156 MW (including JVs) with 24 coal based, 7 gas based stations, 2 Hydro based station and 1 Wind based station. As many as 10 joint venture stations are coal based and 11 solar PV projects. The capacity will have a diversified fuel mix and by 2032, non-fossil fuel based generation capacity shall make up nearly 30% of NTPC’s portfolio.

NTPC has been operating its plants at high efficiency levels. Although the company has 15.56% of the total national capacity, it contributes 22.74% of total power generation due to its focus on high efficiency.
