Pak: Jica launches Leh Nullah flood warning system

Islamabad: The Japan International Corporation Agency (Jica) launched flood forecasting and warning system costing worth Rs 360 million on Leh Nullah Flood Forecasting and warning system Project aimed at providing safety to the citizens of Islamabad and Rawailpindi.

Federal Water and Power Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf and Japanese Ambassador to Pakistan Seiji Kojma attended the inauguration ceremony. The Leh Nullah carries heavy rainfall water touching about 500mm in the monsoon season every year, which takes several precious lives and damages property worth millions.

To improve this situation, Jica at the request of the government of Pakistan carried out a master plan study in 2001-03 and Leh Nullah Flood Forecasting and Warning System was installed with the grant aid project from government of Japan in 2006-07.

This project includes two rainfall gauging station, two water level gauging station, a monitoring station, and 10 warning posts with all the necessary modern facilities. Under this grant aid, the procurement of equipment, their installation and required construction works were realised.
