Upgrade Chtg Port as regional hub: Nobel Laureate

Chittagong: Nobel Peace Prize winner Dr Mohammad Yunus Friday stressed the need for elevating the country's main seaport-Chittagong Port-to a regional mega-port in near future, otherwise, he said, the nation may lose the opportunity of reaping due benefit from it.

He was speaking at a parade arranged in his honour by BNCC cadets, Girl Guides and Red Crescent volunteers at the MA Aziz Stadium here Friday morning.

Yunus said India has already invested a few hundred million US dollars for constructing the Akiyab Port in Myanmar which could have been invested for development of Chittagong Port if there was a scope. Lt Gen (retd) Harun-or-Rashid inaugurated the parade.

Speaking at the function, Yunus said time is running out fast and we would lag behind much than the other countries of the region if we do not take effective steps to turn the Chittagong port into a mega-port.
