Akums Drugs & Pharmaceuticals and Zambia Government Form Joint Venture for New Pharma Manufacturing Facility.
In a significant move to enhance healthcare access, Indian pharmaceutical manufacturer Akums Drugs & Pharmaceuticals and the Government of the Republic of Zambia (GRZ) have announced a joint venture to establish a state-of-the-art medicine manufacturing facility in Zambia. The partnership aims to provide high-quality and affordable generic medicines to the country’s population.
The new facility will not only supply medicines for the domestic market but also serve as a hub for exports to neighboring African nations, including Zimbabwe, Namibia, Botswana, Malawi, Tanzania, and Mozambique.
The joint venture will be headquartered in Zambia, with Akums holding a 51% majority stake and the GRZ, through a state-nominated entity, holding the remaining 49%. The partnership will be overseen by a joint board with representatives from both parties. The joint venture is expected to be formally established by the third quarter of fiscal year 2026, after which construction of the facility will begin.
