Avadi will get piped water supply in a few months.

In a few months, residents of Avadi, the largest suburban pocket in the west of Chennai, no longer need to scurry for water.

A massive individual drinking water supply project is being executed by the Avadi municipality and Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board (TWAD).

At present, municipal workers along with TWAD officials have been working to connect pipelines on the streets with main distribution lines.

In the initial phase, linkage work between wards 3 and 15 was completed.

Funded by the Union Ministry of Urban Development under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM), the water supply improvement project is being executed at a cost of Rs. 113.58 crore. “We want the municipality to complete the water project soon. The local body should also ensure regular supply of water through tanker lorries in the neighbourhood until then,” said S. Priya, a resident.

Apart from the existing overhead tanks (OHTs), eight more OHTs in Avadi, Thirumullavoyal and Sivan Koil were constructed with each tank to store around ten lakh litres of water.

The water supply project will yield an additional 140 lakh litres of water a day to the existing supply of 170 lakh litres a day. Once the project is completed, families will be get water every day for an hour against the current supply of twice a week, C. Mathevannan, municipal commissioner, told The Hindu.
