CIDCO gets approval for Navi Mumbai airport project

Mumbai: The state cabinet gives formal approval to City and Industrial Development Corporation's (CIDCO) plans to develop second airport for the city in Navi Mumbai area. The cabinet approval allows, CIDCO to call global bids for this Rs 10,000 crore project once they receive detailed project report (DPR).

The CIDCO, which has received the inception report from its consultant Louis Burger, is expecting the DPR from the consultant within next four to five months. We will be inviting global bids after that, said senior official from CIDCO.

The project will require around 2,000 hectare land, out of which 1150 hectare is in CIDCO's possession and around 450 hectares in other government agencies and rest needs to be acquired. This is spread across 7 villages and around 4,000 families will have to be rehabilitated.



The Mumbai airport can handle 20 million passengers annually, which will increase to 40 million after modernisation. However, by 2013, this capacity will be utilised to its full capacity.

If things go as per the schedule, airport will be operational by 2012.
