Cosmic Birla Group to Construct EV Facility in Bengal
Cosmic Birla Group, a recent entrant into the electric mobility sector, has announced plans to establish a facility in West Bengal dedicated to the production of electric two-wheelers. Additionally, the Kolkata-based conglomerate aims to venture into electric three-wheelers and cars within the commercial vehicles segment.
According to Aditya Vikram Birla, Chairman and MD of Cosmic Birla Group, the company intends to initiate production of electric three-wheelers in the fiscal year 2026-27. The proposed facility, slated to be set up in Domjur, West Bengal's Howrah district, is expected to commence operations within the next three to four months. The total investment for this venture is estimated at around ₹50 crore.
The Bengal plant is projected to have a production capacity of approximately 15,000 vehicles per annum, contributing to the group's strategic expansion into the electric mobility domain.
Cosmic Birla Group made its foray into the electric mobility sector through the acquisition of Maharashtra-based Raft Motors six months ago. Founded in 2017, Raft Motors operates two plants and specializes in electric vehicle manufacturing.
In a recent development, Raft Motors unveiled four models of electric scooters under the brand Raft Cosmic EV. With this launch, the company's product portfolio now includes five e-scooters and one electric bike, indicating its commitment to innovation and growth in the electric vehicle market.
Aditya Vikram Birla expressed the group's ambitious plans for the EV segment, emphasizing a strategic focus on diversification into three and four-wheelers. The planned production of electric three-wheelers in the fiscal year 2026-27 aligns with the group's vision to expand its presence and make significant contributions to the sustainable mobility ecosystem.
