Further delay in construction of Nanjundapuram ROB in Coimbatore.

Completion of works for a road over bridge across the railway line on Nanjundapuram Road is getting further delayed. It was expected to be completed by the end of July and according to a State Highways Department official, the work will get over by the end of August.

Almost all works are over, except bitumen topping, the official of the department said. The contractor has assured that the project will be completed by the end of this month as it is in the final stage and works are in progress. However, the focus is on the road over bridge and funds are not available to take up the service lane work, the official said.

K. Kathirmathiyon, secretary of Coimbatore Consumer Cause, said the project is already delayed and the department officials should get additional funds from the Government to complete the service lane. They should take it up with the ROB rather than delaying it.

The Rs.12.6 crore project involves construction of a 693-metre, two-lane bridge. It includes 337.75 metre road on the Ramanathapuram side and 317.26 metre road on the Podanur side. Works started two years ago and land acquisition was completed last August. The project was getting delayed because of financial problems for the contractor.

Mr. Kathirmathiyon also said the Coimbatore District Road Safety-cum-Traffic Advisory Committee meeting, which was last held in February this year, is likely to be held next month. Several road projects were pending in the district and land acquisition has not been completed for many of these projects, he said.
