"Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Ltd Inks MOU for Construction of Green Electric Tugs"

In a significant stride towards India's aspiration to become the 'Global Hub for Green Shipbuilding' by 2030, Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) Ltd., a leading defence shipyard, has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Shift Clean Energy (Shift), Seatech Solutions International (Seatech), and the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS). The agreement, signed on Wednesday, November 22, 2023, is geared towards the development of Electric Tugs known as E-VOLT 50, aiming to revolutionize the tugboat industry by minimizing carbon emissions, enhancing operational efficiency, and setting new standards for performance and environmental sustainability.

GRSE, renowned for its expertise in defence shipbuilding, will be responsible for constructing the platform based on the design provided by Seatech, while Shift will contribute energy storage solutions. ABS will play a crucial role in ensuring that the construction and design adhere to all applicable regulatory standards, certifying safety, reliability, and compliance.

Cmde PR Hari, IN (Retd), Chairman and Managing Director of GRSE, emphasized the significance of this collaboration, stating, "We are excited to be part of this groundbreaking collaboration that combines the expertise of GRSE and three industry-leading organizations. 'E-VOLT 50' is a bold step towards a cleaner and greener future for the maritime sector. By utilizing sustainable energy solutions and cutting-edge technology, we aim to redefine the standards of performance, efficiency, and environmental stewardship."

GRSE has already made strides in the development of environmentally friendly vessels. Presently, the shipyard is in the process of constructing a zero-emission electric ferry for the Government of West Bengal, designed to accommodate 150 passengers. Upon commissioning, this ferry is expected to revolutionize passenger services along the Hooghly River and other major waterways.
