Hyundai to Equip Domestic Models with Made-in-India AGM Batteries.
Hyundai Motor India Ltd (HMIL), the country’s second-largest carmaker, will integrate Made-in-India AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) batteries, developed by Amara Raja Energy & Mobility Ltd., across its domestic vehicle lineup starting in the fourth quarter of FY 2024-25.
The AGM batteries, used as SLI (Starting, Lighting, and Ignition) batteries, boast 150% greater durability than conventional CMF (Complete Maintenance Free) batteries. They also offer an extended operational temperature range and a longer lifespan, the company said in a statement.
“HMIL will be the first auto OEM in India to adopt indigenously manufactured AGM battery technology, thanks to Amara Raja,” said Gopalakrishnan Chathapuram Sivaramakrishnan, Whole-time Director and Chief Manufacturing Officer of HMIL.
Hyundai is also advancing its localisation initiatives, working with over 194 vendors to source more than 1,238 components and trim parts for its Chennai manufacturing plant. Similar localisation strategies are being planned for its upcoming facility in Talegaon, Maharashtra.
