Kottayam to Get a Skywalk Soon.

Paving way to a hassle-free traffic and a secured passage for the pedestrians in the city, a skywalk is coming up at the Seematti junction.

The site of the proposed skywalk is one of the busiest crossings in the town. As per a study conducted by the National Transportation Planning and Research Centre (NATPAC), per day around 40,000 vehicles and 11,000 pedestrians are passing through the Seematti junction which is also a meeting point of five important roads in the town.

At peak hours, even 6,000 to 8,000 people cross the road at this point.

The skywalk which would be built making use of high end technology would have two elevators. Volunteers’ service would be made available for the functioning of these elevators. The skywalk would also have sophisticated kiosks and seats. LED advertisings would be exhibited on the walk and the revenue obtained from this would be utilised for its maintenance works.

The skywalk would come under the purview of the Road Safety Authority and it would be constructed by the Roads and Bridges Development Corporation.

A team led by District Collector U V Jose has already visited the site where survey would be commenced soon.

To discuss the project, Transport Minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan held a meeting at the collectorate conference hall here on Monday in which Transport Commissioner, the district collector, municipal chairman K R G Warrier and NATPAC director Sreedevi were present among other officials. For monitoring the project works, a committee with the Transport Commissioner as chairperson and District Collector as convener has been set up.

To take further decisions on the project, a meeting will be held on May 15 at the district collector’s chamber which would be presided over by the Transport Minister. The committee members would also take part in the meeting.
