L&T Secures Major Contract for Construction of Two Fleet Support Ships.

Larsen & Toubro's Precision Engineering Systems business vertical has secured a prestigious order for the partial construction of two Fleet Support Ships (FSS) from Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL), with the Indian Navy as the end user.

The Indian Navy signed a contract with HSL in August 2023 for the design and construction of five FSS vessels. These specialized naval ships provide logistics and material support to naval task forces at sea. Each FSS will measure over 220 meters in length and have an approximate displacement of 45,000 tons, making them some of the largest vessels in the Indian Naval Fleet.

Aligned with the Government of India's vision of "Aatmanirbhar Bharat," these vessels, a first of their kind, will be built domestically. To meet challenging delivery timelines, the ships will be concurrently constructed by both L&T and HSL. This collaborative shipbuilding approach is intended to rapidly enhance the Indian Naval fleet while promoting economic activity and technological advancement in India's maritime sector.

Since receiving its first defense shipbuilding order in March 2010, L&T has designed, constructed, and delivered more than 70 defense vessels, demonstrating its 'Make in India' capabilities. Remarkably, most of these vessels have been delivered on or ahead of schedule.

L&T will construct the two Fleet Support Ships at its greenfield shipyard in Kattupalli, near Chennai, on India's east coast. This state-of-the-art shipyard, designed in-house, adheres to globally benchmarked technological practices.
