Madhya Pradesh Proposes ₹4,000-Crore Six-Lane Greenfield Expressway.

The Madhya Pradesh government is pushing ahead with a ₹4,000-crore plan to build a new six-lane greenfield expressway connecting state capital Bhopal with commercial hub Indore, with the project expected to cut travel time between the two cities to around two-and-a-half hours from nearly four hours currently.

The proposed high-speed corridor is among the state’s priority infrastructure projects and assumes added significance with Ujjain set to host the Simhastha in 2028. The state government is exploring executing the project on its own to accelerate implementation.

Unlike an upgrade or widening of the existing Bhopal-Indore road, the proposed expressway will be built on an entirely new alignment. Officials said the detailed project report and alignment have been approved.

The corridor will broadly follow the aerial distance between Bhopal and Indore, which is around 160 km. Once completed, the journey between the two cities is expected to take two to two-and-a-half hours.

The project was initially proposed with the approval of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH). However, the ministry had suggested increasing the capacity of the existing Bhopal-Indore road by adding two lanes.

The state government is instead seeking a greenfield corridor, arguing that a new alignment would provide faster and more efficient connectivity while bypassing congested stretches, towns and existing traffic bottlenecks.

The expressway is also being planned as part of Madhya Pradesh’s broader regional connectivity strategy for the Bhopal metropolitan region. The plan seeks to create a modern road network linking Bhopal with surrounding towns, industrial areas, educational institutions and emerging economic centres.

The new corridor is expected to strengthen connectivity between Bhopal and Indore and benefit investors, entrepreneurs, students, tourists and the general public. Improved connectivity could also spur development along the alignment by creating opportunities for industrial, commercial and service-sector clusters.

The state government’s move to consider taking up the ₹4,000-crore project on its own is aimed at avoiding delays and ensuring that construction progresses within the required timeframe, particularly ahead of the 2028 Simhastha.

Once implemented, the project is expected to create a new high-speed regional corridor linking some of Madhya Pradesh’s key urban and economic centres while significantly reducing travel time between Bhopal and Indore.
