New Meerut expressway underpass may help unclog Noida Sector 62.

An underpass for light vehicles between Noida and Indirapuram, near CISF road, opened recently an important piece in the new traffic plan for the area once the Delhi-Meerut Expressway becomes fully functional.

National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has not been able to open the main access-controlled expressway at this point because the foot overbridge connecting Sector 62 (Noida) and Indirapuram is still being built. The Sector 62 crossing is always clogged with autos that take people between Noida and Ghaziabad; hundreds of people also jump over the expressway’s fences to get to the other side. The footbridge is being built to stop this. And the underpass opened on Saturday will let autos cross from one side to the other over without having to drive on the wrong side.

But whether this will free up the Sector 62 crossing or not will depend on whether police strictly enforce the traffic plan.

“The spot is notorious for unscheduled stops of three-wheelers. It has also led to the problem of jaywalking, but with the opening of this underpass, this problem will be addressed to a large extent,” said Mudit Garg, DGM, NHAI.

Madho Singh, an auto driver, said, “Earlier we had no option, so we parked our autos on the highway but with the new underpass becoming operational, we will gradually start parking away from the highway since we can cross over to either side of the Delhi-Meerut Expressway without a problem.”
