NLC India Ltd Initiates Biomass Co-firing Operation in Tuticorin Joint Venture

NLC India Limited (NLCIL) has taken a significant stride towards sustainable thermal power generation by initiating bio-mass co-firing at its coal-based thermal power station, NLC Tamilnadu Power Limited (NTPL), located in Tuticorin. The commencement of this eco-friendly operation aligns with the Ministry of Power (MoP) guidelines and underscores NLCIL's commitment to environmentally conscious practices.

The bio-mass co-firing, which commenced on December 5, 2023, involves the blending of pelletized stubble waste with coal for combustion in the thermal power station. This innovative approach not only reduces coal consumption but also transforms agricultural waste into a valuable resource.

Shri. Prasanna Kumar Motupalli, Chairman and Managing Director of NLCIL and Chairman of NTPL, inaugurated the co-firing operation. He emphasized the numerous benefits of bio-mass co-firing in thermal power stations and highlighted the potential carbon credits that this sustainable practice could accrue.

The utilization of stubble waste, which would otherwise be burned without purpose, exemplifies a responsible waste management approach. By incorporating the waste biomass into the power generation process, NLCIL aims to contribute to the reduction of both bio-mass waste and coal consumption in thermal power stations.

NLCIL recently organized a Regional Level Workshop at Neyveli on "Use of Biomass for Co-firing in Thermal Power plants," engaging power plant operators, policymakers, experts, and pellet manufacturers. The insights gained from this workshop played a crucial role in realizing the concept of co-firing at the Tuticorin coal-based power station.

This strategic move is expected to yield multiple benefits, including addressing agriculture waste management challenges in the country by repurposing agricultural waste for power generation. NLCIL's foray into bio-mass co-firing exemplifies its commitment to sustainable energy practices and aligns with broader environmental conservation objectives.
