Railways mull multi-level car parking at Coimbatore Jn.
Growing number of cars and space crunch for parking has led to the Railways look at construction of a multi-level car parking facility at Coimbatore railway junction.
Official sources here said the multi-level parking facility would be constructed on Private Public Partnership (PPP) model. Though the project was planned two years ago by the Salem Division on BOT model, it had no takers.
Hence, it was kept in abeyance for quite some time due to lack of interest shown by the contractors.
A project is under way to construct a multi-level two-wheeler parking facility.
An official told The Hindu that when the two-wheeler parking on the rear entrance is ready, the space occupied currently by the two-wheelers on the rear side would be closed and will be used for construction of a new goods shed.
The multi-level car parking facility to accommodate nearly 500 cars would come up where the goods shed is currently located. The existing goods shed building would be demolished.
The project is in a primitive stage. Works to arrive at a cost estimate and design for the project have just commenced, the officials said.
