ReNew and JERA Collaborate to Assess Green Ammonia Projects in Odisha

ReNew Energy Global plc Partners with JERA to Develop Green Ammonia Facility in India

Nasdaq-listed ReNew Energy Global plc has entered into an agreement with JERA Co., Japan's leading power generation company, to jointly establish a green ammonia production facility in India. ReNew, through its subsidiary ReNew E-Fuels Private Limited, will collaborate with JERA to assess the development of a green ammonia production project in Paradip, Odisha.

According to a public statement by ReNew, the companies will conduct a joint study to evaluate the commercial viability of the project. The proposed facility will utilize approximately 500 MW of high-capacity utilization factor (CUF) renewable energy to produce green hydrogen, a crucial feedstock for green ammonia. By 2030, the project aims to have an annual production capacity of around 100,000 tonnes of green ammonia.

ReNew stated that JERA will have the right to offtake this green ammonia for use in Japan.

Sumant Sinha, Founder, Chairman & Chief Executive Officer of ReNew, expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration, emphasizing its significance in accelerating the clean energy transition. He highlighted the potential of green ammonia in reducing carbon emissions and noted that the project will contribute to a cleaner future while supporting India's National Green Hydrogen Mission.

Yukio Kani, Global Chief Executive Officer & Chair of JERA, described the joint development agreement as a significant milestone, bringing them closer to achieving a decarbonized society. He emphasized the focus on sustainability, affordability, and stability in future energy solutions.

In addition to this initiative, ReNew had previously signed a framework agreement with the Government of Egypt in 2022 to establish a green hydrogen plant with an investment of $8 billion in the Suez Canal Economic Zone. Furthermore, ReNew is engaged in a joint venture named GH4India Pvt Ltd with Indian Oil Ltd and L&T to collectively establish a green hydrogen business.
