State Govt to Press for Athirappally Project.

The State Government will take the initiative for implementing the Athirappally hydroelectric power project, Electricity Minister Aryadan Mohammed told the Assembly recently. Studies are on for implementing the project by conserving 'minimum ecological flow' as per the recommendation of the Kasturirangan panel, the minister said in reply to questions by B D Devassy, Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, M Hamza and S Sarma.

A report will be submitted to the Ministry of Environment and Forests and it is hoped that the clearance will be given, he said. The 163 MW project planned in the Chalakkudy river had to be shelved owing to protests by environmentalists.
