Subway expansion begins at Coimbatore Junction.

The subway connecting platforms 1 to 6 at Coimbatore Junction is being expanded to ease extra rush, sources here said.

According to officials, the present subway with two bays are not enough to meet the growing passenger traffic. Hence, it was decided to expand as per the instructions of the Divisional Railway Manager U. Subba Rao. The expansion work has been taken up at an estimated cost of ₹5 lakh. The work began a few days ago to expand one more bay for a width of about 3 metres from the entrance up to Platforms 3 and 4.

A portion of the information counter will be taken up for expansion. As a result of this, the cloak room situated in the middle of the subway would be shifted to its end, the officials said.

Expansion would also ease the congestion and enable the passengers to reach platforms 3 and 4 in the lifts already commissioned.

Commissioning of a new lift for platforms 1 and 2 at an estimated cost of ₹25 lakh has already started and expected to be completed within six months. Preliminary work for commissioning of escalators for platforms 1 and 2 had already begun, an official added.
