Tamil Nadu Signs MoU with Ministry of Defence for Defence Testing Centres.

Tamil Nadu has entered into three Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with the Ministry of Defence (MoD) to establish the country’s inaugural Defence Testing Centres under the Defence Testing Infrastructure Scheme (DTIS) within the state. A fourth MoU for another testing centre is in its final stages and expected to be signed by the end of this month. This initiative aims to fortify indigenous defence production by addressing critical gaps in testing infrastructure, with a specific emphasis on engaging Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) and Start-Ups. The total cost for all four projects is estimated at ₹183 crore, as per an official release.

Preparations for the establishment of these testing centres will commence shortly, with operations slated to begin in early next year, according to the release.

The DTIS initiative is strategically designed to support indigenous defence production by establishing Greenfield Defence Testing Infrastructures (DTIs) as shared facilities under private sector management, backed by governmental assistance. These facilities will be situated in Defence Industrial Corridors (DICs) and other priority industrial clusters, aimed at bolstering the defence manufacturing industry. They will provide essential infrastructure for quality testing and certification, thereby fostering growth in the aerospace and defence (A&D) sector within India, the release highlighted.

TIDCO (Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation), as the nodal agency for the development of the Tamil Nadu Defence Industrial Corridor, has collaborated with the Ministry of Defence to facilitate the establishment of these crucial testing centres.
