Tamil Nadu to get 4,000-MW power projects

Chennai: Public sector power generation major, NTPC, and a subsidiary of IL&FS, will each put up a 4,000 MW power project in Tamil Nadu.

In two years Tamil Nadu would be surplus in power.

Tamil Nadu Electricity Board’s loss of Rs 6,000 crore would be wiped out in two years, because the Board would be able to sell power to neighbouring States and earn profits.

According to sources, the State Government had decided on unbundling the electricity board, putting the transmission operations in a one company (Tamil Nadu Power Transmission Corporation) and generation and distribution in another.

The transmission company would eventually become a joint venture.

The structure of the new company is yet to be finalised. Many foreign companies and some in India, including the public sector Power Trading Corporation, were interested in joining hands with Tamil Nadu Power Transmission Corporation.
