"Tata Motors Plans Sanand Plant Upgrade in Gujarat for Larger Passenger Cars, Announces MD"
After its initial focus on producing Tata Nano and hatchbacks, Tata Motors' plant in Sanand, Gujarat, which has been operational for 14 years, is gearing up to manufacture larger variants of passenger cars.
Shailesh Chandra, the Managing Director of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicle and Tata Passenger Electric Mobility, stated, "The plant was constructed to deliver high-quality small cars in a very frugal and cost-effective manner... Going forward, we look forward to enabling this plant to make bigger cars. This is because the size of cars (being sold in the Indian market) is getting bigger. There will be certain adaptations required in certain shops within the factory to enable it to accommodate bigger cars. It requires plant shutdowns and investments."
Chandra declined to provide specific details regarding the necessary investments or whether the larger car variants to be produced at the Sanand-1 plant in the future would be sedans or SUVs. However, this shift in production signals a strategic move by Tata Motors to align with changing market demands for larger vehicles in India.
