"Tata Power Subsidiary Commences Solar Cell Production in Tamil Nadu"

TP Solar Ltd, a subsidiary of Tata Power Renewable Energy Ltd. (TPREL), has begun commercial production of solar cells from its 2 GW solar cell line at its manufacturing facility in Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu. The plant is described as the country's largest single-location solar cell and module production facility, according to a company press release.

The production of solar cells follows the start of module production earlier this year, with cells being a key component used to create solar modules. Currently, the facility has a 2 GW solar cell production capacity, aimed at supporting Tata Power's growing demand for high-quality, domestically manufactured solar components, particularly for large-scale solar projects.

The plant is set to ramp up to its full 4 GW capacity over the next 4-6 weeks, with peak production expected soon. Since the commissioning of its module production line in October 2023, the facility has produced 1,250 MW of solar modules.

Tata Power is investing ₹4,300 crore in the facility. In September 2023, the company received a $425 million funding commitment from the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation.

Initially, the solar cells and modules from the Tamil Nadu plant will be used in Tata Power's ongoing projects, enhancing the company's supply chain. Tata Power also plans to explore broader market opportunities for future expansion.

The plant's modules are on India's ‘approved list of models and manufacturers’ (ALMM), a requirement for selling modules in the country. The company is confident its solar cells will soon be added to the ALMM as well.
