Vedanta Aluminium, GAIL Sign Agreement to Supply Natural Gas for Cleaner Production.
Vedanta Aluminium, India’s largest aluminium producer, has entered into a Gas Sales Agreement (GSA) with GAIL Gas Limited, a subsidiary of GAIL (India) Limited, to supply natural gas to its Jharsuguda smelter, the world’s largest aluminium plant. The transition to natural gas is expected to begin by late 2025, and it is anticipated to reduce carbon emissions by 47,292 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent (tCO₂e) annually, according to the company’s statement.
Under the agreement, approximately 32,000 standard cubic metres (SCM) of natural gas will be supplied daily through a dedicated 7.5 km pipeline to support Vedanta Aluminium’s operations. This includes powering the company’s new 430 kilo tonnes per annum (KTPA) cast house, which is set to produce 250 KTPA of billets and 180 KTPA of other value-added aluminium products.
The collaboration between Vedanta and GAIL aligns with the company’s ongoing efforts to enhance sustainability in its production processes, with the switch to natural gas helping to reduce the environmental impact of its operations while supporting the growing demand for aluminium.
