Vizag-Chennai corridor: ADB team to visit Vizag.

The Union Government in the Budget has proposed the establishment of Chennai-Visakhapatnam industrial corridor as a major project and the Asian Development Bank (ADB) has come forward to finance the project. A team from the ADB is visiting the district soo as a preliminary exercise for the purpose.

Development of infrastructure along the coast from Visakhapatnam to Chennai and linking the rail and road networks is one of the key components of the projects. Five major industrial parks are proposed in the Vizag-Chennai corridor including one in Visakhapatnam. In the Visakhapatnam park, the special economic zones in the vicinity of the city and the proposed petroleum, chemical and petro-chemical investment region (PCPIR) between Vizag and Kakinada form an important part.

It has also been decided to establish an IT investment region (ITIR) in the city around Madhurawada and Bheemli where the IT units are concentrated. The IT sector is still in the nascent stage in the city, with the exports amounting only to Rs. 1500 crores or so per annum. But the AP Government has ambitious plans to develop Vizag as a favoured IT destination and efforts are being made in that direction.
