The Karnataka government has joined hands with Wistron (ICT Service Management Solutions) in a significant move to establish a state-of-the-art laptop manufacturing plant. A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed, outlining Wistron's commitment to invest ₹1,500 crore in the project, expected to generate approximately 3,000 job opportunities, as announced by Large and Medium Industries Minister MB Patil.
Wistron, a Taiwan-based global technology service provider, has expressed its intention to commence construction activities for the manufacturing plant in July 2024. The plant is set to start producing laptops by January 2026. In pursuit of this initiative, the company has requested 32 acres of land for the project, and discussions are underway to secure the necessary land in the Bengaluru region.
Minister Patil highlighted the pioneering nature of this venture, marking it as the first-of-its-kind laptop manufacturing unit in Karnataka. The facility, designed in alignment with Industry 4.0 standards, will feature a fully automated setup, manufacturing laptops for various brands. Over 50 per cent of the laptops produced at this unit are slated for export, showcasing the global reach of the manufacturing facility.
In addition to laptops, the plant is expected to produce Internet of Things (IoT) components and electric vehicle (EV)-related parts, contributing to the expanding landscape of technology and innovation. Minister Patil emphasized that beyond electronic production, the initiative aims to foster innovation, create employment opportunities, and position Karnataka as a leader in the electronics manufacturing industry.
Present at the signing ceremony were Alec Lai, President of Global Manufacturing; Dennis Hung, Senior Director; Rachael Lu, General Manager; Sudhir C, Manager of Wistron Corp; S Selvakumar, Principal Secretary; and Gunjan Krishna, Department of Industries.
