Works for Rs. 50 crore to make Chennai roads safer.

To make driving on highway roads in Chennai, Tiruvallur and Kancheepuram safer, it has been planned to carry out works worth Rs. 50.67 crore to rectify accident spots and 'S' curves, as well as construction of medians and improvement of junctions.

'Though only 5 per cent of accidents are caused due to engineering defects, we are taking concerted efforts to prevent even these. Vulnerable spots have been chosen for correction,' said an official source. This is part of a larger Rs. 1,000-crore proposal for such works for the entire State.

Works for improvement of seven junctions, three 'S' curves, construction of 25 retaining walls near open wells, six retaining walls along canal bunds and medians on five stretches of GST Road and GNT Road will be taken up soon. A portion of the Velachery-Tambaram road runs along a tank bund where a retaining wall will be constructed. An open drain on Sadras-Chengalpet Road will be closed and signage will be improved.
