"Amara Raja Partners with Piaggio to Develop and Supply Lithium-Ion Cells and Battery Packs"

Amara Raja Advanced Cell Technologies (ARACT), a subsidiary of Amara Raja Energy & Mobility Ltd (ARE&M), has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Piaggio Vehicles Pvt Ltd, the Indian arm of the Italian Piaggio Group. The agreement focuses on developing and supplying Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) Lithium-Ion cells and chargers for Piaggio's electric vehicles. These products will be produced at Amara Raja’s Gigafactory in Divitipally, Telangana.

Vikramaditya Gourineni, Executive Director of Amara Raja Energy & Mobility, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership: “We have had a long-standing relationship with Piaggio India and deeply value their role in advancing electric mobility in India. This collaboration aims to create innovative products and solutions that will indigenize and transform the country’s EV sector.”

Diego Graffi, Chairman & Managing Director of Piaggio Vehicles, echoed the sentiment: “The MoU strengthens our longstanding, mutually beneficial partnership with Amara Raja. Together, we look forward to enhancing our successful EV journey as India transitions to electric mobility.”

Since 2020, Amara Raja and Piaggio India have worked together to advance the transportation sector, with Amara Raja supplying 50,000 NMC Li-ion battery packs and EV chargers exclusively to Piaggio India. These batteries have accumulated over 120 crore kilometers of usage.

In a related development, ARACT held a ground-breaking ceremony for its Customer Qualification Plant (CQP) in Divitipally, Mahabubnagar district. The plant’s Phase 1, with a capacity of 1.5 GWh, has been inaugurated. It will manufacture Li-ion battery packs tailored to Indian conditions for use by major EV original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and for stationary energy storage needs.

The CQP, set to become operational by the first quarter of the next financial year, will produce various cell types for customer testing and validation. The project has received a boost following ARE&M’s collaboration with Gotion Inobat (GIB) for technology and customized solutions.
