Ahead of the Delhi elections, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, announced four major highway projects aimed at addressing traffic congestion and air pollution in Delhi and its surrounding areas. The projects, which involve an investment of ₹12,500 crore, are part of the government's ongoing efforts to enhance infrastructure in the national capital.
In addition to the new highway initiatives, Gadkari also revealed the approval of ₹1,200 crore from the Central Road and Infrastructure Fund (CRIF) for further development in Delhi. The announcements come a day after seven Delhi BJP MPs raised these demands with the government.
One of the key projects, a tunnel from Shiv Murti to Nelson Mandela Marg, was previously approved, and preparatory work has already commenced. Another project, designed to provide connectivity from the Urban Extension Road (UER) II to the Delhi-Katra Expressway via the KMP Expressway, was proposed by Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini after the state elections.
Gadkari highlighted the importance of these projects in easing the burden of traffic coming from outside Delhi, noting that they will significantly improve connectivity and reduce congestion.
Details of the projects include:
20 km link from UER-II to Delhi-Katra Expressway via KMP Expressway, costing ₹2,500 crore. This will provide direct connectivity for vehicles from J&K and Punjab to IGI Airport and the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway.
17 km link from UER-II at Alipur to Delhi-Dehradun Expressway at Tronica City in Ghaziabad, with an investment of ₹2,200 crore, enhancing connectivity for vehicles from Rajasthan and Haryana to Dehradun.
35 km link from Delhi-Dehradun Expressway to Noida, serving as a bypass for East Delhi, with a projected cost of ₹4,400 crore.
5 km tunnel from Shiv Murti on Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway to Nelson Mandela Road, with a cost of ₹3,500 crore.
Gadkari emphasized that these projects are part of a broader effort to combat traffic congestion and improve air quality in Delhi. In total, around ₹60,000 crore worth of projects have been rolled out for Delhi and its adjoining areas to boost infrastructure and address environmental concerns.
