87 per cent of road repair work complete, says NHAI.

With the extended deadline to restore damaged roads in the district set to expire on 5 September 2014, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has submitted a report to District Collector M.G. Rajamanickam stating that 87 per cent of repair works on Edappally-Aroor NH 47 Bypass has been completed.

The PWD is yet to restore Vyttila Junction on the Tripunithura Road, where potholes have been holding up traffic ever since the monsoon began. 'We hope to pave junctions vulnerable to damage using concrete tiles this fiscal,' a Public Works Department (PWD) engineer said.

Mr. Rajamanickam said he had directed the Additional District Magistrate to get assessment reports from various agencies on the condition of roads.

'The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has said it has mobilised men and materials to repair and tar coat Aluva-Kadavanthra metro rail corridor, where 65 per cent repair works are over. They have sought a couple of days more to complete resurfacing of damaged patches,' he said.

The DMRC has resurfaced one side of the road in most of these places using bituminous macadam bituminous concrete (BMBC).

Choked and encroached-upon drains were overflowing in the rains, worsening the plight of many roads, DMRC sources said.

'We will remove slabs and clean the drains once roads are restored. We need two more days of dry weather to complete road-restoration works. The free-left turn from Edappally to NH-17 will be covered using concrete tiles in two days,' the sources said.
