Adani Green Energy Ltd (AGEL) is set to add 3 gigawatts (GW) or 3,000 megawatts (MW) of solar power by the end of this year, with an estimated investment of $1.5-2 billion. This expansion will boost AGEL’s total installed capacity at Khavda, Gujarat, to 7 GW.
The company recently commissioned 693 MW of renewable energy projects, raising its total operational capacity at Khavda to 3.7 GW. With this latest addition, AGEL’s overall installed capacity has reached 15 GW across its portfolio.
Spanning 538 square kilometers—nearly the size of Mumbai—the Khavda power plant is set to become a renewable energy hub. AGEL has outlined plans to develop 26 GW of solar and 4 GW of wind energy at the site by 2029, requiring an investment of approximately ₹1.5 lakh crore. Once fully operational, the Khavda plant is expected to generate 81 billion units of electricity annually, enough to power 16.1 million homes while offsetting 58 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions each year.
As part of its backward integration strategy, the Adani Group has established a 4 GW solar cell and module manufacturing facility at Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone near Mundra port. With increasing demand, the company has commenced work to scale this capacity to 10 GW.
Adani Solar, the photovoltaic (PV) division of the Adani Group, aims to achieve a 10 GW metallurgical-grade silica-to-polysilicon-ingot-wafer capacity by 2027-28. Additionally, the company plans to expand its ancillary production, including solar glass, aluminum frames, encapsulants, and backsheets, to 10 GW by the same timeline. It already has an operational ingot-wafer capacity of 2 GW.
In the wind energy sector, Adani Wind, in collaboration with Germany-based W2E Wind to Energy GmbH, has developed one of the most powerful onshore wind turbines. The 5.2 MW turbine features a 160-meter rotor diameter, a swept area of 20,106 square meters, and a tip height of 200 meters, further strengthening the company’s renewable energy capabilities.
