BMC to construct two RoBs to decongest traffic at Jacob's Circle.
In order to decongest the massive and frequent traffic snarls at the Jacob's circle area near Mahalakshmi, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation will construct two road over-bridges (RoBs), one on the Anandilal P Marg road and the other on the Babu Sakpal Marg road, running on either side of the Mahalakshmi road over-bridge. At present, the Mahalakshmi RoB bears the brunt of both the north- and south-bound traffic.
The RoB on the Anandilal P Marg will meet the arterial Dr E Moses road, while the one on the Babu Sakpal Marg will be convenient for vehicles going to the northern part of the city.
A consultant appointed by the civic bridges department is in the process of preparing a feasibility report on the project. A recent traffic volume study has revealed that both the RoBs should be constructed on an urgent basis, as the present traffic at Mahalakshmi area is 4,439 passenger car units (PCUs) per hour as against the ideal 2,900 PCUs per hour. Moreover, the volume capacity (V/C) ratio at the area is 3.7 at present, whereas the Indian Road Congress recommends it to be no more than 0.7.
