"CMDA Taps REPL for Chennai Outer Ring Road Growth Corridor Development"
In a significant move, the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) announced on Thursday that it has selected Rudrabhishek Enterprises (REPL), based in Delhi, to devise a comprehensive plan for the development of a 1 km stretch on both sides of the 62 km Outer Ring Road (ORR).
The CMDA envisions the Outer Ring Road as a high-growth corridor characterized by sustainable density levels. The development plan aims to stimulate business and industrial activities in the vicinity of Chennai by enhancing infrastructure and increasing the floor space index.
This ambitious project seeks to transform the Outer Ring Road into a well-connected, affordable, and dynamic corridor, ultimately reducing transportation costs, attracting business investments, and creating high-quality public spaces. Covering an expansive area of 125 sq km, the corridor will adopt the Transit Oriented Development concept, incorporating multiple transportation facilities to enhance accessibility, according to an official release.
Pradeep Misra, CMD of REPL, emphasized the critical juncture that Chennai finds itself in, grappling with escalating traffic issues and strained infrastructure due to rapid urban growth. He highlighted the necessity of upgrading existing systems to address these challenges, stating that the city's traffic congestion significantly impacts lives and hampers economic progress. The Outer Ring Road project is seen as a pivotal step toward alleviating these concerns and fostering sustainable development in Chennai.
