Cochin Shipyard Inks JV to Pioneer Electric Mobility and Energy Storage.

Cochin Shipyard Ltd (CSL) has entered into a joint venture agreement with HBL Engineering Ltd to develop and commercialise electric mobility and energy storage technologies tailored for the maritime sector.

The partnership will focus on advancing key components such as marine-grade batteries, battery management systems (BMS), electric motors, power electronics, and charging infrastructure. The initiative is aimed at serving both domestic and global markets, aligning with the growing push for sustainable and environmentally friendly maritime solutions.

According to CSL, the collaboration marks a significant step in strengthening India’s capabilities in green shipping technologies. The companies plan to jointly develop indigenous solutions that can help reduce dependence on imports while supporting the maritime industry’s transition to cleaner energy.

Jose VJ, Director (Finance) and Chairman & Managing Director (Additional Charge) at CSL, described the agreement as a “watershed moment” for the company. He said the partnership underscores the importance of working with domestic technology firms to build a robust green maritime ecosystem.

He added that the initiative would not only benefit CSL but also enable the broader Indian maritime sector to adopt locally developed battery and energy solutions, helping the industry meet evolving green shipping requirements.
