Deendayal Port in Gujarat Set to Become Mega Port in Three Years: Sonowal.
Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal announced recently that Deendayal Port in Gujarat’s Kutch district will transform into a mega port within the next three years, with an expected cargo handling capacity of 300 million tonnes annually. Speaking at the Deendayal Port Authority (DPA) in Kandla, Sonowal highlighted the significant growth of the port, aiming to enhance its position as India’s leading port.
"We are determined to make Kandla Port a mega port. This transformation will bring in a cargo handling capacity of 300 million tonnes per year, creating new employment opportunities and boosting the local economy," Sonowal said.
The minister emphasized the port's existing role as India's number one port in cargo handling capacity. He also revealed plans for building a new mega port beyond the creek in Kandla and the development of a shipbuilding cluster in the region.
During his visit, Sonowal laid the foundation for two Centres of Excellence (CoE) focused on green hydrogen and green maritime fuels. He also inaugurated key infrastructure projects, including new harbour mobile cranes, a telescopic gangway at oil jetty-8, a waste recycling plant for Gandhidham, and a new building for Kendriya Vidyalaya School.
In addition, the minister chaired a high-level business-to-business (B2B) meeting with green hydrogen stakeholders to explore opportunities for collaboration and investment in green hydrogen production, storage, and logistics.
