DMRC Initiates Mid-Life Overhaul of Blue Line Trains to Improve Safety and Commuter Experience.

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has launched a comprehensive mid-life refurbishment programme for its Blue Line trains, aimed at enhancing passenger safety, comfort, and overall travel experience. The initiative focuses on upgrading the oldest rolling stock (RS-1) trains with modern technology and improved amenities to ensure continued reliability and compliance with current standards, the metro operator said.

As part of the programme, DMRC is refurbishing a total of 70 trains across the Red and Blue lines in a phased manner. In the first phase, 12 trains were upgraded, followed by 18 trains in the second phase. Work on an additional nine trains is set to begin soon, after which the remaining nine trains in this phase will be taken up. In the third phase, 22 Blue Line trains are scheduled for refurbishment, with completion targeted by November 2027.

The trains, originally inducted between 2002 and 2007, have completed nearly two decades of service and are now being equipped with updated systems and features in line with the latest rolling stock standards. DMRC Managing Director Vikas Kumar recently inspected the first refurbished train of the third phase before it was inducted into passenger service.

With 31 trains refurbished so far, the initiative underscores DMRC’s continued focus on modernisation and improving commuter experience across its network.
