Gujarat's Green Hydrogen Technology to Illuminate Oman Airport

Greenzo Energy Pvt Ltd, a Gujarat-based firm, is set to deploy an indigenous electrolyser in Oman, a move that will aid in lighting up the airport using green hydrogen. The electrolyser, manufactured locally in Gujarat, is designed to produce 400 units of electricity per hour, marking a significant step towards sustainable energy solutions.

Sandeep Agarwal, the founder and CEO of Greenzo Energy Pvt Ltd, revealed the details of the ₹130-crore deal, stating, "We will be sending the 1-MW Alkaline electrolyser to Oman as part of a pilot project. It will produce green hydrogen, which will be integrated with fuel cells to power the airport. The electricity generated has the potential to meet a portion of the airport's power requirements."

The process involves passing solar power generated by the Oman airport through the electrolyser, which contains water. This separates hydrogen from oxygen, with 18 kg of hydrogen produced per hour during daylight hours. The hydrogen is then purified and stored in tanks for later use. After dusk, the stored hydrogen is converted back to electricity using fuel cells and atmospheric oxygen.

Agarwal highlighted that the entire unit, including the fuel cells, will be supplied by Greenzo Energy Pvt Ltd to Oman. This setup will produce a steady flow of 400 units of electricity per hour for the airport. He noted that the materials required for building the electrolyser were locally sourced from Ahmedabad.

The formal unveiling of this groundbreaking electrolyser is scheduled to take place at Sanand, Gujarat, in the presence of dignitaries from Oman, with Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel expected to officiate the ceremony on Thursday.

According to Agarwal, the indigenously-produced electrolyser can generate green hydrogen at a cost of ₹280 per kg, provided the electricity supplied costs ₹3 per unit. He emphasized that the electrolyser has the capability to operate continuously, marking the culmination of a decade-long journey to perfect this technology. The company has already secured an order book worth ₹1,200 crore, signaling a promising future for sustainable energy solutions.
