Herrenknecht to Expand Chennai Operations with New Tunnel Boring Machine Plant.

Germany-based Herrenknecht AG, a global leader in tunnel boring machine (TBM) manufacturing, is set to expand its presence in India with a new manufacturing plant in Chennai, according to information accessed by businessline.

The expansion comes in response to growing demand for TBMs across India, driven by a surge in tunneling projects, including metro rail, water, and infrastructure developments. Currently, many of the TBMs deployed in India are imported from countries such as China, the US, and Germany.

Herrenknecht was the first company to establish a TBM assembly facility in Chennai back in 2007. The upcoming plant will mark a significant upgrade in its local capabilities, with the company planning to set up the new manufacturing unit on a 12.4-acre site in North Chennai.

This move is expected to strengthen the company’s position in the Indian market and support the country’s increasing need for advanced tunneling solutions.
