"Hyundai Acquires GM's Talegaon Plant, Plans Rs 6,000 Crore Investment in Maharashtra"

Hyundai Motor India Ltd (HMIL) has successfully acquired General Motors India's Talegaon plant in Maharashtra and is set to invest Rs 6,000 crore in the state, as announced by the South Korean automaker during an agreement signing at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

While the exact acquisition cost remains undisclosed, HMIL, the second-largest carmaker in India, had previously signed a term sheet with General Motors India for the potential acquisition of the Talegaon plant. The completion of the acquisition followed the fulfillment of specific conditions and regulatory approvals from government authorities and stakeholders.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between Hyundai Motor India and the Government of Maharashtra in the presence of Uday Samant, Minister of Industries, Government of Maharashtra, and Un Soo Kim, MD & CEO, Hyundai Motor India Ltd., on January 18th, 2024, as confirmed by Hyundai.

Un Soo Kim, MD & CEO of Hyundai Motor India, emphasized the importance of India as a crucial market for Hyundai Motor Company. He stated, "As we look forward to the next decade of progress for Hyundai Motor India, it is critical for us to augment our manufacturing capacity in India. The Talegaon manufacturing plant will play the role of a catalyst in achieving HMIL’s one million annual production capacity milestone."

The Talegaon plant, with an annual production capacity of 130,000 units, is scheduled to resume manufacturing in 2025. HMIL plans phased investments for upgrading infrastructure and manufacturing equipment at the plant to meet Hyundai Global Operating and Manufacturing Standards, ensuring the production of automobiles that exemplify manufacturing excellence.

This strategic acquisition aligns with HMIL's goal of increasing production capacity, having already elevated its Sriperumbudur plant's capacity from 750,000 units to 820,000 units in the first half of this year. The acquisition of the Talegaon plant will further boost HMIL's production capacity to 1 million units per year, strengthening its position in the Indian automotive market."
